After receiving prayers from his mother and being baptized by St. Ambrose, he converted back to Christianity. Upon his mothers death, he returned to his home in Africa and sold all of his property, turning over the proceeds to the poor and opening a monastery. He became Bishop of Hippo in 396. The city of Saint Augustine, Florida, was established on his feast day and named for him.
