Colette was orphaned at the age of 17. Rather than marrying, she wanted to live a religious life. As an adult, she transferred from the Beguines to the Order of Poor Clares, and was instructed to raise monasteries for then-current Pope Benedict XIII. Up to her death, she raised 18 monasteries, all advocating living in poverty.
