Some children saw a child bearing a striking resemblance to that of a statue of the Virgin Mary and Jesus kept in the town. Known as Nuestra Senora de Atocha and Santo Nino de Atocha, the statue and its legend became revered and celebrated throughout Spain, Mexico, and Latin America.
