Hermann of Reichenau was born with a cleft palate and cerebral palsy, or possibly lateral sclerosis, meaning he had difficulty moving and speaking. As a Benedictine monk, he learned and wrote several works of theology, arithmetic, and even music. Although he became blind later in life, he was known for his inventions and his poetry, his most famous poems being 'Salve Regina' and 'Alma Redemptoris Mater'.
