Camillus was a strongly built man, reaching the height of six and a half feet. He became a successful soldier but spent his money gambling, eventually becoming penniless. He decided to become a monk, but was denied because of a leg injury, so he went on to work in a hospital. Later he founded the Congregation of the Servants of the Sick, a group of male nurses who cared for the sick, both in hospitals and at home.
