Gerald was born into nobility, yet suffered through many illnesses while growing up and eventually ended up losing his sight. When his father passed away, Gerald took over as Count of Aurillac - he abandoned his belongings in order to better serve God. While he considered joining a religious order, he was convinced otherwise, and lived the rest of his life in chastity and as a layman.
