Maria's father was a violent drunk and her education was minimal, leaving her vulnerable to insults, but she joined the Teachers of St. Dorothy, Daughters of the Sacred Heart. After working as a kitchen maid, she was trained as a nurse and worked in the children's ward at a hospital in Treviso. She continued caring for the sick even as the hospital fell under military control During WWI, at which point she took care of the injured soldiers. (Birth name: Anna Francesca Boscardin)
