Also known as Maria Euthymia, and one of eleven children, she developed rickets as an infant but later worked on her family farm. By her early teens she had begun to feel a calling to religion. She soon started learning house keeping management while working in a hospital before entering the Sister of the Congregation of Compassion. After graduating from a nursing program, she served as a nurse during WWII. She worked at the Dinslaken hospital and spent her free time praying before the Eucharist.
