Painted by St. Luke the Evangelist, the depiction of the 'Black Madonna' was believed to have saved the city of Constantinople from Saracens before being transferred to Jasna Gora in Poland. The face appears black because it has been possibly faded by soot from candles burning in front of it. Nowadays, Czestochowa, home of the painting, is the most popular shrine in Poland.
