Raised during WWII, Karol Jozef Wojtyla and his father, moved to Krakaw to escape the German invasion. During this time he was able to study secretly, and eventually earn his doctorates in theology and philosophy. He was elected pope in 1978 following Pope Paul VI. He would travel to all countries that would accept him, led the movement to oppose Communism in Europe, and survived two attempted assassinations. Pope John Paul II passed away in 2005 and was canonized in 2014 by Pope Francis.
