Saint Augustine of Canterbury was a monk and an abbot in Rome. He and 40 brother monks were sent by Pope Saint Gregory the Great to the British Isles to convert its people to Christianity. Upon hearing stories of the Celts he turned around and went back to Rome, only to be forced to go back. He is known for spreading the faith throughout England, and converting King AEthelberht, the first English king to convert to Christianity.
